In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), starting in our nursery class, children are taught basic mathematical skills initially through play and as they progress through EYFS, teaching becomes more structured, with dedicated group lessons devoted to the EYFS maths curriculum. We believe that a sound grasp of number, shape and space gives the children confidence to explore and problem-solve in maths, leading to deeper understanding and mastery of the subject higher up the school and beyond. Parents can help, especially in the early years of their child's school life by counting with their child, pointing out and reading numbers in the community for example house numbers and speed limit signs. Asking children to count everyday objects for example eggs in a box or counting items in the supermarket trolley, will help to secure a basic understanding of numbers and develop a child's confidence
